The first North American edition of the embedded world Conference & Exhibition, was held 8-10 October 2024, in Austin, Texas, to connect researchers, developers, industry and academia from all disciplines of the embedded world.

The education program for the event included a dedicated MIPI track with three sessions focused on MIPI I3C, as well as a presentation from MIPI member BitifEye Digital Test Solutions on the latest testing methods and measurements for automotive SerDes.

MIPI I3C, the Next-Generation Utility and Control Bus Supporting Time‑Critical Applications

Michele Scarlatella, MIPI Alliance
After an introduction to the MIPI I3C® interface, the presentation focused on its latest features, including the provision of extra bus lanes that increase the interface speed to nearly 100 Mbps, High Data Rate (HDR) modes that enable improvements in power efficiency and reliability, group addressing that enables multicasting to peripheral devices, and device-to-device tunneling that allows direct communication between target devices. The presentation then focused on an actual use case and described how the precise asynchronous and synchronous timing features of I3C provide an efficient framework for data acquisition and control for modern embedded applications. The presentation concluded with an overview of I3C developer resources including I3C Host Controller Interface, I3C driver for Linux, conformance test suites, application notes and FAQs.

Demystifying I3C Protocol

Fausto Navadian, Binho LLC
In this presentation, Binho shared the expert insights acquired while working with the I3C protocol. The session aimed to demystify the protocol and help engineers overcome all the barriers they might face in their first steps with I3C adoption, showing how to get up and running with the protocol as quickly as possible using hardware and test tools currently available on the market.

Advantages of Using MIPI I3C Protocol in SSDs & MEMS

Vijay Krishna & Santhosh Ramaraj, Soliton Technologies Private Limited
As technology progresses, newer SSDs and MEMS devices require more advanced protocols to address the demands for higher performance, faster data transfer rates, better power efficiencies and improvement in all aspects to meet the evolving needs of modern computing systems. One such protocol gaining significant traction in this context is MIPI I3C, which can be a replacement for traditional interfaces like I2C and SPI. In this presentation, the presenters explored the advantages of MIPI I3C adoption and how it can enhance performance, power efficiency, and system integration.

Connecting the Automotive Future: A Harsh Environment for Moving Bits

Julien Henaut, BitifEye Digital Test Solutions GmbH
This presentation addressed the design, diagnostic and compliance testing methods required to ensure error-free communication links composed of interoperable components through the vehicle lifespan. The presentation demonstrated how to emulate the noise spectra and time-profiles specified by the emerging standards — which includes MIPI A-PHY® — and presented measurements that demonstrate how DSP-based SerDes can track cable degradation and the extent to which they can cancel EMI.
