Charter
The IO Bridges Working Group was established in March 2025, after starting as a Birds of a Feather (BoF) group in 2024. Chartered with the development of new IO bridge specifications, the group will address conversion of IOs targeted at logical and protocol layers; design, detection, enumeration, configuration and management of the IO bridges; and software and hardware considerations for IO bridges.
Industry Need
The working group will address the need for standardized hardware and software solutions to support IO bridges use-cases in computing segments, which require conversion from/to one type of interconnect to the other. As current proprietary solutions (custom hardware and software) for such conversions are not scalable, the need was recognized for standard bridge solutions to facilitate interoperability, scalability and adoption of fast-moving technologies.
Focus
The working group will oversee the development of IO bridge specifications, with an initial focus on a new MIPI I3C® bridge specification, as well as related technical supporting documents. Areas of focus include electrical considerations of IO interfaces, IO bridge detection, use of associated software, discovery capabilities, configuration and management, end-to-end operational flows and implementation recommendations based on use cases. The working group charter is broadly scoped to enable proposals for additional MIPI bridging specifications in the future.
