MIPI SoundWire consolidates many of the key attributes available in existing mobile and PC-industry audio interfaces and introduces a comprehensive interface and scalable architecture that can be used to transport audio and control data for audio peripherals. Companies can apply the specification as needed to best fit their particular systems integration requirements.
The SoundWire interface addresses a wide range of system scenarios where up to eleven Slave interfaces share the common bus, with up to 8 data lanes providing bandwidth extensions; these Slaves can range from low-cost single channel devices to 8-channel high bandwidth devices with processing and/or low-power always-on capabilities.
More than 25 companies from across the audio technology ecosystem—including audio peripheral, electronic design automation and silicon vendors as well as OEMs—took part in developing MIPI SoundWire. The specification is in the final stages of adoption and will become an official MIPI document in late February 2015.

Pierre Bossart is a Principal Engineer in the Intel Open-Source Technology Center. He's been involved in audio since 1997 in various roles as DSP, software engineer and platform architect with Freescale, STMicroelectronics and Digigram. Pierre chairs the MIPI LML working group which defined the SoundWire standard. Pierre is also involved in open-source contributions to the Linux/Android audio stack.
