Born out of the mobile industry, JEDEC Universal Flash Storage (UFS) is an essential memory technology widely used within mobile, PC and automotive architectures. Upcoming enhancements in the soon-to-be-released UFS 5.0 will advance the capabilities of this technology to enable the latest cutting-edge applications that demand the fastest load times, speed of operation, and ultra-reliable performance.

In this webinar, the chairs of the MIPI M-PHY and UniPro working groups, along with the co-chair of the JEDEC UFS Technical Group, will explain how UFS 5.0 leverages the recently updated MIPI M-PHY v6.0 physical-layer and MIPI UniPro v3.0 link-layer specifications to enable double the read/write speeds compared to UFS 4.1, while at the same time providing class-leading, performance-per-watt power efficiency.

Specifically, the webinar will detail how:

  • The new M-PHY v6.0 physical-layer specification adds a new speed gear: High Speed Gear 6 (HS-G6), which enables up to 46.694 Gigabits per second (Gbps) of bandwidth per lane—double the potential data rate compared with the previous specification.
  • The new UniPro v3.0 transport layer specification supports doubling of the physical-layer data rate, provides new features that enable interconnects to operate at ultra-low bit-error-rates (BER) of less than 10-22, and enables higher-speed link start-up.
  • The new UFS 5.0 leverages M-PHY and UniPro enhancements to double the UFS interface bandwidth and enable up to ~4.2 GB/s for read and write traffic. This part of the presentation will show how some of the most demanding applications, including edge-AI Large Language Models (LLMs), will benefit from the higher bandwidth and lower latency, as well as other new features of UFS 5.0. The latest release of the standard will translate into reduced load times and faster operation, providing tangible benefits for end users.

The webinar will conclude with a Q&A session with the speakers.
